Why I built Portioned.
Portioned did not begin with me trying to invent a business idea. It began with a conversation and one simple question: “How much did you actually make?”
The question behind the product
For someone with a fixed salary, that question may have a straightforward answer. For someone whose income arrives in different amounts, from different places and at different times, it can take much more work.
Money may come in from freelance work, a small business, content, consulting or a side project. Some of it may already be meant for bills. Some may need to support the work that produced it. Some may have been borrowed and still needs to be repaid. Looking at an account balance alone does not explain any of that.
The problem was not simply recording income. The real problem was understanding what each amount was meant to do once it arrived.
Why a normal monthly budget did not feel right
Many budgeting systems begin with a predictable monthly number. They ask you to plan the month before it starts, assign fixed amounts and then stay within them.
That can work well when income is regular. But if one month looks nothing like the next, the plan can become disconnected from reality. You may not know the total you will receive, but you still need a consistent way to make decisions whenever money arrives.
That is where the percentage idea became important. Instead of depending on a fixed amount, you decide the purpose of each portion. Whether the next income is small or large, the same priorities can still guide how it is organised.
Borrowed money needed its own place
One of the clearest decisions in Portioned was that borrowed money must never look like earned income.
A loan can increase the amount of money available to you, but it does not increase what you earned. It also creates a responsibility to repay. Mixing the two gives an inaccurate picture and can make the money you have appear healthier than it really is.
Portioned keeps borrowing separate, connects it to a repayment plan and shows what remains outstanding without adding it to earned income.
From a question to a product
The first version of Portioned is built around a simple flow. Record income when it arrives. Split it into percentage-based portions. Record expenses against the right portion. See what remains. Keep different profiles and currencies organised without pretending unlike currencies form one meaningful total.
It is not a bank, an investment platform or a source of financial advice. It is a practical tool for seeing your own financial activity more clearly.
Portioned is one of the products I am building under UriBuild. Give every income a purpose.
